Patrick McKelvy

American Artist
Patrick McKelvy's idyllic landscpaes are images typical of rural Western Pennsylvania and Southwestern Virginia. Although, careers have taken him all over the globe, it is Appalachia that inspires him to paint. Leisurely motorcycle explorations down backroads; observations of how farmsteads hills and fields fit together and studies of the architecture of clouds become scenes on canvas or paper of a world that is slipping away.
After four years in the military and a job with the U.S. Government, he studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts at age 35. He was greatly influenced by the Wyeth's. Frederick Church, Albert Bierstadt adn many of the great realist landscape painters of the 19th and early 20th century. The teachers at the Academy, in particular his friend and mentor Lou Sloan, imparted to Patrick an ever increasing love of drawing and painting.
Work and raising a family forced Patrick's art to take a back seat for several decades till his retirement in 2009. Even so, he was able to exhibit works in galleries in Blacksburg, Va., Roanoke, Va., Lewisburg W Va., Pittsburgh, Pa. and Indiana, Pa. His art has been included in several juried shows and has won awards including People's Choice Award in the New Growth Arts festival in Indiana, Pa., and Best in Show in the Indiana Art Association open invitation show in Indiana, Pa. Mr. McKelvy now works daily in his studio in Indiana, Pa.
